On July 6th, Madina Lake bassist Matthew
Leone came to the aid of a woman being
physically assaulted by her husband on the
1300 block of West Ohio Street. After
intervening and calling Chicago police,
Leone was beaten by the man and left
unconscious in the street. Matthew’s brain
injuries were so severe that multiple
surgeries have been required to remove
portions of his skull. Matthew does not have
medical insurance and is currently
recovering at home.

This week alt-rock legends FILTER released their fifth album, The Trouble With Angels. Known for hits “Take a Picture” and “(Hey Man) Nice Shot,” the band’s new album is far heavier than their previous, more politically-charged Anthems for the Damned. A few days before Richard Patrick and the band were scheduled to play Bowery Ballroom here in NYC, FILTER stopped by LWMB’s HQ and belted out three acoustic tunes. Watch and enjoy!

Filter “The Trouble with Angels”
Rocket Science
From the onset of “the
Trouble with Angels,” the fifth studio
release in fifteen years from Filter, the
band returns to a sound perhaps long
forgotten, one that blends towering drums,
churning, down-tuned guitars and chugging
riffing, a sound that some fans of the band
might not remember. Those fans whose
interest has waned in the band throughout
the years due in large part to soft,
pillow-y radio mainstays like ‘Take a
Picture’ should perk up and heed the call of
the opening few stages of the record,
outings like ‘the Inevitable Relapse,’ ‘Drug
Boy’ and ‘Absentee Father’ that sound closer
to “Short Bus” era Filter circa 1995 than
most anything else they’ve released, though
as is the case of most all great rock
records, it isn’t quite so one dimensional
in terms of sound.

Title: The Trouble With Angels Label:
Rocket Science Ventures Year: 2010
Rating: 4 / 5
Back from a long break and ready to get back in the ring, Filter's ready to go the distance and bring the pain only they know they could. Armed with a rousing set of hard rockin' alternative tunes and a new record entitled Trouble With Angels, Filter is once again gearing up to conquer the charts and bring their own brand of infectious music back to the masses. One of the most highly-anticipated records of 2010, The Trouble With Angels goes much deeper than it's predecessor's and certainly has more to offer as well. The break has obviously been a blessing for the band as they've created a magnificent record by laying on the songwriting thick while keeping elements of their original formula intact for good measure.

Last Friday, July 9th I got on the phone
with Richard Patrick of Filter, primarily to
talk about the new record (which can be
pre-ordered
here). The conversation ended up going
in many directions.
The first few
minutes are Richard and I talking about the
name Filter, what it means to him and many
of the people he’s played with over the
years. He talks about the process of finding
talented people all around him and working
with them.

FILTER’s fifth studio album – The Trouble
With Angels - is an absolute gem. Just when
you think the hard rock world’s totally lost
its nuts, Richard Patrick and company drop
one of the year’s most sonically poetic
albums. Patrick is joined by new lead
guitarist Rob Patterson (Ex-OTEP, KORN), and
has clearly returned to his ‘industrial
metal’ roots. The album is produced by Bob
Marlette (BLACK SABBATH, SALIVA, ATREYU) and
slams the listener first with the hot
single, “The Inevitable Relapse”, offering a
modernized Filter without losing that
signature sound they became so famous for,
along with plenty of Patrick’s dark sense of
humor.

Writing for a music site never ceases to impress me with the things it has given me access to, from the free music to occasionally show, but most of all it’s the chance to talk to the artists themselves that really seems cool. With a new Filter album dropping this August I was fortunate enough to catch up with Richard Patrick and get him to talk a little bit about ‘ The Trouble With Angels’ and whatever else pops into his head.
‘The Trouble With Angels’ will be released August 17, 2010

Wow, can you believe that it’s been fifteen years since Filter’s mega-hit “Hey Man, Nice Shot” took over the radio waves and won the hearts of millions all over the world? I know that it may be hard to imagine, but crazy enough, it’s true. After four previous releases (some successful and some not), Filter are back with an energy, fury and vengeance like we haven’t heard in a very long time. Filter’s fifth studio album titled The Trouble With Angels is an intense, creative journey of a distorted mind that you might not want to miss.

| "The Trouble With
Angels is a majestic, transcendent rock
album filled with urgency and commitment and
it keeps things on the down low so we aren’t
jettisoned into the sea. The consistent
excellence of the album is a treat like any
time spent with Naima and one needs to
treasure it as such." For the full review

Contrary to the street buzz in 1995, "Hey Man Nice Shot" was not inspired by the suicide of Kurt Cobain.
Rather, the ominous, alt-rock/industrial hit by Filter was spurred by the pistol-in-the-mouth suicide of a Pennsylvania state treasurer -- which was captured by cameras during a televised news conference in 1987.
When the rock world last heard from Filter auteur Richard Patrick, on the 2008 album "Anthems For the Damned," no such ambiguity surrounded the singer-guitarist's work.
Sample lyric from that album's "What's Next": "Take the soldiers and put them in sand. Pull the child right from the man. It's not hard to get swallowed up, George Bush is (expletive) us up. See the lies that he has sown."
Such blunt salvos, Patrick says, were part of his effort to "redeem" himself.
