The
90's may have had some truly awful horror
movies (at least in the beginning) and
dreadful fashion, but one thing that wasn't
awful during that time was the music. In
fact, I'd go so far as to say that the 90's
were one of the best decades for music since
the 70's, although I do love a lot of music
from the 80's. But coming back to the point
at hand, the 90's were a time for
experimentation and new genres. This was a
time when the glamour and sparkly beauty of
hair metal bands gave way to the filthy,
dirty looks of grunge and nu-metal. It was
also a time when industrial rock was
incredibly popular, with artists such as
Nine Inch Nails, The Smashing Pumpkins, and
more garnering huge fan bases. One such band
was Filter, who appeared on many horror
soundtracks, becoming a genre favorite. So
let's take a look at their 1995 debut album,
Short Bus, and see if nearly 17 years has
altered its impact.

"Hey Man Nice Shot" that peaked at #76 on the Billboard Charts. It is considered to be one of their most notable songs, yet they reached #12 of the Billboard charts with
"Take a Picture" off their album Title of Record and were back on the charts reaching number #94 with
"Where Do We Go From Here." 2011 has them on the road with alternative rockers Bush and Chevelle.

Filter to Tour with Bush and Chevelle
FILTER will kick off as special guests on the upcoming BUSH/CHEVELLE Tour staring 9/27 in San Diego and Finishing up on 10/28 in San Antonio, Texas. Richard Patrick and company are currently winding down their headlining run with Saliva, Anew Revolution and Heartset Self-Destruct. Touring behind their new album THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS and promoting their hit single NO LOVE, FILTER has had a busy 2011.
In June they toured Europe and hit some never before played markets like Russia, Estonia and Finland. In addition they played to sell out crowds at various festivals and headline shows in Austria, Switzerland and Germany. In October they will have the lead single from the new ZZ TOP Tribute album
"GIMME ALL YOUR LOVIN" which they have been playing in there set to an overwhelming response. Filter will also be playing various headlining shows through the end of summer and fall.
The Million Dollar Elm Event Center was rocking last Thursday night when the Under the Skin of Angels Tour made it's way through T-town. Four bands total were on the bill for the evening, and at the low price of twenty dollars per ticket, those in attendance certainly got their moneys worth. Chicago's Heart-Set Self Destruct and Austin's Anew Revolution warmed up the crowd as the evening got underway.
The energy level in the room bumped up a couple of notches when co-headliner Filter took the stage. The group started the night with the hard-hitting
"No Love" from their 2010 album "The Trouble with Angels." Following an interesting cover of ZZ Top's
"Gimme All Your Lovin," they continued with
"The Take," a song that was co-written by front-man Richard Patrick and current Rob Zombie guitarist John 5.

Review - Filter @ Courtside - Dubuque, IA - 7-17-11
Filter comes to Iowa again; not to my hometown of Des Moines, but Dubuque this time. What, only a 3-hour drive on a work night to see Filter tear up the stage? Oh, give me some! This show was worth every bit of suffering the next day for lack of sleep! This was my third time seeing them, and I am seriously hooked. The new Filter album is one of those rare albums where every single song is great. I'm talking about
"The Trouble with Angels." I bought it right after I caught them here in Des Moines last winter, and I can't keep it out of my CD player. Every couple of weeks, I manage to pick a new favorite song from it. It is arguably Filter's best album to date. I could see every song on it being a radio hit.

Alternative rock icon Richard Patrick and Filter turn the heat up in Portland
by Ruben Mosqueda on November 27, 2010
Richard Patrick / Photo by Jon T. Cruz
Richard Patrick and Filter made a stop
in
Portland
on November 20th. They played at Berbati's
Pan to a packed house. It was a cold night
but the audience braved the plummeting
temperatures to catch Filter's return to the
rose city. The band hit the stage well after
11:45 PM opening with two intense new tracks
off their new record The Trouble With
Angels; "Drug Boy" and "No Love." The
reaction to the new material was
outstanding. Filter proceeded to tear the
venue down with a bombastic set that
included fan favorites like; "Take A
Picture," "Hey Man, Nice Shot," and "(Can't
You) Trip Like I Do." Prior to the show
Oregon Music News caught up with Richard
Patrick for an informative interview. All
photos by Jon T. Cruz with a gallery at the
end of this article.
You have
Filter up and running again and you have a
new album The Trouble With Angels. We'll get
to that in a minute. A couple of years ago
you put together a band called Army of
Anyone with Robert and Dean DeLeo and
drummer Ray Luzier. Why is that band not
active today?
We put that
band together and we put a lot of time an
energy in it. When it came we looked at each
other and said "alright then that was that."
We got busy with the bread and butter of our
careers; Ray went on to join Korn, the DeLeo
brother reconnected with Scott Weiland and
got Stone Temple Pilots together and I got
Filter active again.
Richard
Patrick and Filter ripped the bottom out of
the rock charts with 1995's "Hey Man, Nice
Shot". The driving, crunchy guitar line
propelled the ode to Budd Dwyer's suicide on
live TV, and also introduced the record
buying public to the multi-faceted genius of
Richard Patrick. That first single set the
table for Filter's first record, "Short
Bus". The heavy, industrial music was
suddenly in vogue, with other noted artists
like Marilyn Manson and Patrick's first
band, Nine Inch Nails also enjoying massive
success.
Filter struck again with
1999's "Take a Picture", a paean to
stripping down to his boxers while traveling
on an airplane. The softer ballad approach
opened more doors for the band, drawing in
more listeners that didn't normally wear
black nail polish. The band was flying high
and success was inevitable.
Now in their third decade, Filter has all the sting of their youth and from the sound of their fifth long player, time has only amplified the intensity of frontman Richard Patrick. Falling somewhere between Jane's Addiction and Nine Inch Nails, Filter have always been a hard band to pin down. Their biggest hit
- 1999's "Take A Picture" - found Patrick's scream replaced by an almost McCartney-like pop sensibility, but the bulk of their work is an aggressive blend of agro-synth grooves and throaty, metal vocals. The Trouble With Angels is no exception. Although now a husband and a father, Patrick's edges haven't been softened by domesticity. "Love is murder/Love is further/Further down the hole," he sings on the opener "The Inevitable Relapse." Vacillating between industrial synth pile-ups ("No Love") and driving Goth metal ("Absentee Father") this might very well be Patrick's defining work. Elsewhere, "No Re-Entry" brings to mind Linkin Park; "Catch A Falling Knife" is dark and daring and "Clouds" finds Patrick confessing, "I dreamt of life with no mistakes." Certainly not one to be found here.

Video: LimeWire Music Blog Three-Song Acoustic Session with FILTER
This week alt-rock legends FILTER released their fifth album, The Trouble With Angels. Known for hits “Take a Picture†and “(Hey Man) Nice Shot,†the band’s new album is far heavier than their previous, more politically-charged Anthems for the Damned. A few days before Richard Patrick and the band were scheduled to play Bowery Ballroom here in NYC, FILTER stopped by LWMB’s HQ and belted out three acoustic tunes. Watch and enjoy!
To work with the hands or brain, according to our requirements and our capacities, to do that which lies before us to do, is more honorable than rank and title.

Originally
from Queens, New York, FILTER bassist, Phil

teenager, and quickly made a name for
himself in the L.A. music scene as the
bassist for the dynamic TRIBAL SEX CULT.
Filter “The Trouble with Angelsâ€
Rocket Science
From the onset of “the
Trouble with Angels,†the fifth studio
release in fifteen years from Filter, the
band returns to a sound perhaps long
forgotten, one that blends towering drums,
churning, down-tuned guitars and chugging
riffing, a sound that some fans of the band
might not remember. Those fans whose
interest has waned in the band throughout
the years due in large part to soft,
pillow-y radio mainstays like ‘Take a
Picture’ should perk up and heed the call of
the opening few stages of the record,
outings like ‘the Inevitable Relapse,’ ‘Drug
Boy’ and ‘Absentee Father’ that sound closer
to “Short Bus†era Filter circa 1995 than
most anything else they’ve released, though
as is the case of most all great rock
records, it isn’t quite so one dimensional
in terms of sound.

CD REVIEW: FILTER "The Trouble With
Angels"
Title: The Trouble With Angels Label:
Rocket Science Ventures Year: 2010
Rating: 4 / 5
Back from a long break and ready to get back in the ring, Filter's ready to go the distance and bring the pain only they know they could. Armed with a rousing set of hard rockin' alternative tunes and a new record entitled Trouble With Angels, Filter is once again gearing up to conquer the charts and bring their own brand of infectious music back to the masses. One of the most highly-anticipated records of 2010, The Trouble With Angels goes much deeper than it's predecessor's and certainly has more to offer as well. The break has obviously been a blessing for the band as they've created a magnificent record by laying on the songwriting thick while keeping elements of their original formula intact for good measure.

Conversation
Last Friday, July 9th I got on the phone
with Richard Patrick of Filter, primarily to
talk about the new record (which can be

in many directions.
The first few
minutes are Richard and I talking about the
name Filter, what it means to him and many
of the people he’s played with over the
years. He talks about the process of finding
talented people all around him and working
with them.

ROCKET REVIEW: FILTER "The Trouble With
Angels"
FILTER’s fifth studio album â€â€Å" The Trouble
With Angels - is an absolute gem. Just when
you think the hard rock world’s totally lost
its nuts, Richard Patrick and company drop
one of the year’s most sonically poetic
albums. Patrick is joined by new lead
guitarist Rob Patterson (Ex-OTEP, KORN), and
has clearly returned to his â€ËÅ"industrial
metal’ roots. The album is produced by Bob
Marlette (BLACK SABBATH, SALIVA, ATREYU) and
slams the listener first with the hot
single, “The Inevitable Relapseâ€ÂÂ, offering a
modernized Filter without losing that
signature sound they became so famous for,
along with plenty of Patrick’s dark sense of
humor.
Little Rat Bastard -
The J Interviews Richard Patrick of FILTER
Writing for a music site never ceases to impress me with the things it has given me access to, from the free music to occasionally show, but most of all it’s the chance to talk to the artists themselves that really seems cool. With a new Filter album dropping this August I was fortunate enough to catch up with Richard Patrick and get him to talk a little bit about â€ËÅ" The Trouble With Angels’ and whatever else pops into his head.
â€ËÅ"The Trouble With Angels’ will be released August 17, 2010

FILTER The Trouble With Angels
Wow, can you believe that it’s been fifteen years since Filter’s mega-hit “Hey Man, Nice Shot†took over the radio waves and won the hearts of millions all over the world? I know that it may be hard to imagine, but crazy enough, it’s true. After four previous releases (some successful and some not), Filter are back with an energy, fury and vengeance like we haven’t heard in a very long time. Filter’s fifth studio album titled The Trouble With Angels is an intense, creative journey of a distorted mind that you might not want to miss.

Filter takes a shot at Beachstock
Contrary to the street buzz in 1995, "Hey Man Nice Shot" was not inspired by the suicide of Kurt Cobain.
Rather, the ominous, alt-rock/industrial hit by Filter was spurred by the pistol-in-the-mouth suicide of a Pennsylvania state treasurer -- which was captured by cameras during a televised news conference in 1987.
When the rock world last heard from Filter auteur Richard Patrick, on the 2008 album "Anthems For the Damned," no such ambiguity surrounded the singer-guitarist's work.
Sample lyric from that album's "What's Next": "Take the soldiers and put them in sand. Pull the child right from the man. It's not hard to get swallowed up, George Bush is (expletive) us up. See the lies that he has sown."
Such blunt salvos, Patrick says, were part of his effort to "redeem" himself.
